Candlemass
Tudor music for the Feast of the Purification
Wednesday, January 27th, 7.30pm
For its first London concert of 2010, Musica Contexta returns to the first work the group ever performed – John Sheppard’s exuberant Cantate Mass.
This great work holds a special place in the affections of the group, and was the subject of its first cd – described by the Early Music Review as ‘One of the most exciting early vocal performances I have heard for some time… unmissable’.
Sheppard’s mass will be framed by chant and polyphony for Candlemas - the final feast of the medieval Christmas cycle. The English observances that developed around Candlemas were elaborate and luxurious, and over time a rich body of music was composed to add beauty and grandeur to the occasion. In particular, Tallis’s Videte Miraculum and Sheppard’s Gaude, gaude, gaude Maria are timelessly moving masterpieces.
